The A walk will be led by Andy and is approximately 13 miles and 1500 feet.
The walk begins in Shap from where we cross the fields to the sleepy farming community of Keld. From here we head to Wet Sleddale passing the reservoir and Sleddale Hall to walk down Mosedale. The name Mosedale stems from the Middle Ages and translates as 'valley with a moss or peat bog'; but don’t worry as we will take a nice (dryish) path! At the end of Mosedale we will cross the beck via a bridge and walk over to Swindale. This is a much more dramatic valley with its rocky crags, green pastures mixed vegetation and trees. After walking a good mile or so, we will then ascend out of the valley and head back to Keld and Shap.
The B walk will be led by Maria and is approximately 8 miles and 1000 feet.
Starting from the rear exit of Tebay Services we will go down to the hamlet of Greenholme and continue north on this quiet, pleasant country lane following Birk Beck - tributary of the River Lune to Scout Green. At this junction we will go across some rough pasture followed by field paths up to Shap Wells, a possible lunch break. Then head on up through the jungle like grounds and red squirrel colony to emerge at the edge of recently deforested area which we will pick our way across (it is pathless) and go up and over Shap Summit 999ft, crossing over to the granite quarry and footpath leading to the A6. Then it’s a straight 2 miles down to Shap. The paths are easy going and no big hills!
The C walk will be led by Lesley and is approximately 6 – 7 miles and 600 feet.
This is a circular. Leaving Shap we go out to Shap Abbey via Skellaw Hill. Next, we aim for Rosgill and the Fairy Crags! From here we go to Parish Crag Bridge, Rayside, Lanshaw Hill and Keld. The walk back into Shap includes the Goggleby Stone.
