Walks ending at Sedbergh 12th October 2024

The A walk will be led by Glynis and is 10.5 miles and 2500 feet

The walk will start at New Bridge along the river Rawthey for about 4 miles to reach Cautley Beck and Cautley Spout waterfall which is the highest in England above ground and should be very impressive in view of the amount of rain we have had lately.  We will walk up the side of the waterfall to the top (steep steps) and will then take the path alongside Force Gill Beck to visit The Calf which is the highest point in the Howgills.  Return to Sedbergh will be past Calders, Rowantree Fold and Winder, coming in to the town near Lockbank Farm.

The B walk will be led by Dom and is 7 miles and 1900 feet (2000 feet descent)

This walk will start around the Cross Keys on the A683 - exact starting point will depend on works in the area.  We start by following the meandering Cautley Holme Beck towards the spectacular Cautley Spout waterfalls. To our left, views of the impressive Cautley Crags develop. The climb, alongside the falls, is steep but mostly on good rock steps, however there is some exposure! Poles will be useful.

Following the main ascent, we continue climbing, but more gently, following the edge of Cautley Crags. There are superb views down into the corrie below and east, to the fells including Wild Boar Fell.

From Great Dummacks we head on to the summit (674m) of Calders, our highest point of the day. The broad Dales Highway leads us towards Sedbergh with expansive views south.

The C walk will be led by Jeff and is 5.7 miles and 764 feet

Starting at the Cross Keys Temperance Inn we cross over the River Rawthey via the footbridge and join the Pennine Way passing Wardses and Crook Holme. From here we move on to Fawcett Bank with lovely views over to Sickers Fell and the Knott on the right side and Bough Fell on the left and then continuing on down to Ellerthwaite, Buckbank and Straight Bridge. From here we cross the A683 and continue on alongside the river past Scrog House and on to Settlebeck Bridge. From here we cross the bridge and follow the footpath along the opposite side of the river down to Chain Dub and crossing back over the river joining a short road walk to Lofthouse. From here we take a right turn crossing fields up to Winder House and following the path back into Sedbergh.
